How Soon We Forget

I have a friend that has just delivered a baby. She complained to me that delivering a baby was a really painfull ordeal and she thinks that she does not want to do it again. Actually her response was the same as my response when I delivered my first baby.

I had a very difficult pregnancy. I had morning sickness or should I say “all day and night sickness” throughout my pregnancy. I was in labor for 24 hours and ended up getting an emergency caesarian operation to deliver my baby. However, I am amazed on how people can forget things so easily. After 4 years, I forgot all those sufferings and only remember the good things about being pregnant. So, we decided to get another baby. Well, as soon as I started to get morning sickness, I kind of regretted the decision. Hahahahaha! How could I forget?

Anyway, if you are pregnant at this moment take a look at the Beaute de Maman line. These products are for women who are pregnant. Beaute de Maman is a unique line of health and beauty products developed by a board-certified obstetrician to treat problems specifically related to the physiological and hormonal changes experienced by women during pregnancy. In fact, Beaute de Maman products have made it into the hands of such Hollywood celebrity moms-to-be including actresses Penelope Ann Miller, Salli Richardson-Whitfield (“Eureka”), Chyler Leigh (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Jennifer Blanc.

So, if you are a pregnant woman, check out these products and probably you might want to order now.

Sewing Needle Tip

Change your sewing needle at the start of each project. Needles do tend to get worn and may snag or pull fabric when dull. Typically, I will use a size 80 to 90 sharp for most of my sewing, but heavyweight fabrics (denims and twills) require a larger size and lightweight knits sew best with a small needle-sized ballpoint needle.

And, if you have problems with skipped stitches or tension problems, always change your needle. You may not know this, but the sewing needle is the first item changed when you take your sewing machine in for service. You may save a few dollars by doing this simple check yourself.

Looking For A Date?

If you are still single and looking for a date probably the best place to find is in your office. However, if somehow everybody in your office has already married, what to do? Probably you can ask your friends and family to find somebody. The question is can you trust your friend or family taste? If your answer it no, then I advise you to look into this site called passion search.

Although I am married, but I am curious about this site and give it a try. You have to fill in your personal details to sign up. This is the part that I am a bit hesistant to do. However, since I was really curious, I filled them all and signed up.

Once I signed up, they sent password to my email. When I sign in, I am amazed that there are about 50,000 members are online and I can directly looking at their fotos and personal information. While I was there a looking around, suddenly I received private chatting invitation from somebody. Since I was not looking for any relationship with another male, I turned him down.

If you are still single, I strongly suggest this site for you.

Scissors

Can not find your scissors whenever you want to cut thread during sewing? Here is the tip that you might find it useful. Tied a decorative narrow ribbon (about 1 yard in length) through the handle of a small pair of scissors. Loop the ribbon around your neck, and you'll have the scissors conveniently placed for clipping threads.

Holodomor Truth

Today I learnt about holodomor. The Holodomor (Ukrainian translation: death by starvation) refers to the famine of 1932–1933 in the Ukrainian SSR during which millions of people were starved to death because of the Soviet policies that forced farmers into collective farms. The Holodomor is considered one of the greatest national catastrophes to affect the Ukrainian nation in modern history where millions of inhabitants of Ukraine died of starvation in an unprecedented peacetime catastrophe. Estimates on the total number of casualties within Soviet Ukraine range mostly from from 2.2 million to 10 million.

Some scholars believed that this horror may have been designed as an attack on the rise of Ukranian nationalism. However others agreed that this was NOT an attept to destroy the Ukrainian nation, but an ineffective economic policy of the Communist governments of the Republics of the Soviet Union.

The scholarly and political debate will doubtless continue. Last September 2008, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution declaring the Holodomor a genocide; a month later, the European Parliament voted to recognize it as a "crime against humanity" but stopped short of the G-word. Meanwhile, it seems that the only time Russia's government remembers the Russian victims of the Terror-Famine is when it needs them to counter Ukrainian claims about "the so-called Holodomor”

Crocheting on Fabric

Crocheting lace onto fabric is a great way to add decorative elegance to everyday items in your home. The basic steps for creating this technique are simple and easy to do.
The first thing you need to do is prepare the fabric by washing and pressing it. This pre-shrinks the fabric and avoids any warping of the finished crochet work.
Next, hem any raw edges by folding them under once or twice and tacking in place with a basting stitch. For curved edges, cut notches (see illustration) to remove fullness when folding the edge under. The more delicate the fabric, the narrower the hem should be (about 1/4 inch for medium-weight cottons, about 1/8 inch for lightweight cottons and a narrow, rolled 1/16 inch for sheers). Purchased items will usually have finished edges, eliminating this step.

To minimize the size of the hole made when working stitches into the fabric, the end of the crochet hook used should be small enough to easily go through the fabric and still catch the thread as you work.
For the foundation stitches, which are usually single crochet stitches, place a slip knot onto hook, hold thread over edge of fabric, insert hook through front of fabric at base of hem (do not catch folded edge of hem), yarn over and draw a loop up to outer edge of hemmed fabric, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook. Continue working stitches, spacing them an even distance apart.
One method of spacing is to calculate the number of stitches per inch needed for the desired pattern. Mark the edge of fabric with pins at one-inch intervals, and space the stitches per inch between the pins. Remove the pins when finished with the foundation stitches.
When working a specific number of stitches onto the edge of square fabric, divide the total number by four and space that number across each quarter of the fabric edge. For round or oval edges, fold the fabric into quarters and place pins at each quarter point and space stitches between pins.

Try these tips with your favorite lace patterns. You can create an almost endless variety of beautiful projects by adding the beauty of crochet to fabric pieces, like this lovely Violets & Forget-Me-Nots Linen Doily. With its lacy round motifs worked on small linen circles, it's a great project to practice the techniques discussed in this article (and you'll have a beautiful floral piece to dress up your home!).

Back-Up Power

Have you ever stayed in the hotel and suddenly had a black out? I had. It happened when I was having a business meeting in Franklin Park, Illinois. I was staying in the hotel near my customer office. After having dinner I was quite very sleepy (I also had a couple glass of wine). I went back to my hotel, and was about to take a bath, then suddenly the whole thing was dark. I could not find anything, and when I called the room service, they told me that they had a black out, and they will give me a candle. However, until I went to sleep nobody come. They didn’t even start the generator. In the end, I just changed my clothes and went to sleep without even bother to take a bath or wash my face. I always bring my torchlight whenever I went outstation after that experience.

I think every hotel should have a back-up power. Not only hotel, even a home should have one. With the increased awareness to the natural disasters in our world, back-up power is becoming more popular for home use. When the power goes out in your neighborhood for whatever reason - bad storm, hurricane, someone crashed into the power grid - you can relax and trust in the knowledge of your back-up system. With a Solar Back Up Power system, you can feel even more confident. So long as there is a sun in the sky, you have a renewable and reusable source of power from solar energy. Unlike other generators that will eventually run out of power, the solar back-up power system lasts and renews its energy time after time.

You can find different types of back-up power systems generated by solar energy. Find a portable solar power solution that allows you to travel or pick up the system and go when you are in an emergency situation. You can find back-up systems that give you a varying level of energy output, depending on your situation (and budget!) In addition to the emergency systems, you can put a solar back up system into your everyday home energy system.

Silk

Silk has long been a favorite luxury fiber in fabrics, and in more recent times, yarns as well. Few fashion items or home accessories -- whether sewn, crocheted or knitted -- feel more exquisite than those made with silk. Here is some interesting trivia on how silk came to be introduced to the Western world in the first place. We certainly owe a big debt of gratitude to two very brave people!

Nearly 3,000 years before Christ, the silkworm was bred exclusively in the great empires of the Far East and throughout the Orient. It was considered a national treasure and a closely-guarded secret for generations. Through six major Chinese dynasties, anyone caught giving away the silkworm secret for making the fine, luxurious threads was tried, publicly disgraced and executed. In fact, there are many stories of attempted smuggling in China that span history for more than 3,000 years.

It is recorded that two Christian missionaries, who were in China from their native homeland of Persia, hid silkworm eggs in their hollow canes as they boarded a ship for their home church in Constantinople. Managing to pass safely through frequent rigorous inspections, they were able to return home and breed their own silkworms to produce silk in Turkey, Anatolia and other parts of Asia Minor. This theft of a Chinese national treasure introduced silk to the Western world for the first time.

Cleaning My Driveway

After 7 years staying in the house that I currently stay, my concrete driveway starting to look dirty. I am thinking to clean my driveway but not sure how, until I found this concrete cleaner site that sells many types of concrete cleaner.

It is said that to properly clean concrete from a soil or stain, the identification of what has caused the problem is critical. Once identified, choosing the proper removal agent is greatly simplified. If the offending substance cannot be identified, it will be necessary to experiment with different treatments in an inconspicuous area.

So, if you plan to clean your concrete, go ahead and check it out yourself.

Woman Power

In 1840, to assist in raising funds to erect a monument to the Battle of Bunker Hill, New England women held a fair to sell their handmade items. Young and old alike, those who rarely worked and those who toiled daily, joined together to crochet, knit, sew and embroider a variety of useful, attractive items that could be sold for the purpose of building the monument. The women raised an astonishing $33,066 in several days -- more than enough to pay for the monument. This is a great testament to "woman power," well before it became a socially conscious issue!

Perfumes

Lets Talk Perfume. My husband gave me a lot of perfumes. I still have 4 bottles of perfumes, 2 bottles are barely used and the rest still haven’t open from the boxes yet. It’s not like I don’t like to wear perfume. I used to wear perfumes long time ago. However, now I simply forgot to wear whenever I am going out. I like flowery smell kind of perfume, not too strong or too spicy. My husband on the other hand, likes spicy kind of smell. He has extensive parfume collections and he always uses perfume whenever he went out of the house.

Reuseable Grocery Bags

Today, everything is about "going green" as we are more focused than ever on the environment and what we can all do to help protect our planet. Cutting down on the use of plastics that clog our landfills and paper that continues to strip our natural wood resources is a great way to help contribute to a better environment.

With that in mind, here is a really cool reusable grocery bags that gives shoppers a great alternative to the question of "paper or plastic?"

Substitute Yarn

Have you ever experienced want to make something badly, but we don’t have yarn required in the pattern? I experienced that many times, but I always manage to find the substitute yarn on my stash using this guide:

2 strands fingering weight (#1) = 1 strand sport weight (#2)
2 strands sport weight (#2) = 1 strand worsted weight (#4)
2 strands worsted weight (#4) = 1 strand bulky weight (#5)

Obesity

The other day I chatted with my friend. I asked about his sister-in-law which is also my friend. We have never met for almost 10 years. He said that she has 1 teenage daughter and she is going to be taller than the parents, but she also has obesity problem.

Do you find yourself looking around these days in your neighborhoods or at the park and wondering where all the kids are? Does it seem as if there are more kids out there who weigh as much as their adult counterparts? It's not your imagination. Obesity is not a health issue anymore. It’s the way of living problem. If you can not change that, obesity is always be there.
